Tricks to propagating wattles and members of the pea family (Fabaceae)

Plant of the Month

Wattle seeds require pre-treatment before germination will commence.  The simplest method is to place the seed in a cup and pour boiling water over it.  Leave to soak overnight.  This softens the hard coating and the seed absorbs water and swells.   Discard seeds that float because they probably have insect damage.  Those seeds that have not swollen may be left longer or treated again.

After heat treatment keep the seeds moist (in a jar is good), washing every couple of days, when the seeds sprout plant them directly into pots with the root pointing downwards, you get higher germination rates and faster growth.
