Soil Health for Climate Resilience Workshops

Latest Newsletter, The Scoop

Our Soil Health for Climate Resilience Workshops were a great hit with participants.  Attendees gained a better understanding of caring for our soils to increase the climate resilience of Landcare sites and properties. HRLN ran two workshops this September at Raymond Terrace and Newcastle, with participants coming from across the regions of Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Maitland and Newcastle.

The workshop was led by Ernie Harbott, a Hunter-based soils and composting guru, who presented a morning talk about soil structure, soil food webs and soil carbon. Landcarers were able to view their own soil samples up close under the microscopes kindly on loan from Lake Mac City Council and Tomaree High School. The afternoon was spent outdoors learning how to conduct practical soil assessment tests in the field including worm counts, root structure, soil structure, rhizosheaths, slake tests, pH test, ribbon test and the jar test.

Many thanks to City of Newcastle Council for providing the venue at Warabrook and Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed.

We will be running one more Soil Health Workshop in early 2027. You can keep updated with dates via the Scoop or follow our Humanitix page.

The workshops were part of our Innovations and Partnerships initiative, made possible by the NSW Landcare Enabling Program. A collaboration of Local Land Services and Landcare NSW supported by the NSW government.
