On the blustery morning of Wednesday 12th June, volunteers from Newcastle Greater Mutual Group, plus some enthusiastic landcarers, braved the cold and wind and turned up in their droves for a planting day at Lake Liddell Recreation Area Reserve. Equipped with plants, mulch, tools and a sense of adventure, the volunteers got stuck in on the project planned by HRLN President Stephen Thatcher. 120 plants including Hardenbergia Gresford Belle, Western Golden Wattle (Acacia decora), Round Leaf Tea Tree (Leptospermum rotundifolium), Kurrajong (Brachychiton populneus), Smooth Darling Pea (Swainsona galegifolia), Narrow Leaf Ironbark (Eucalyptus crebra) and Kangaroo Thorn (Acacia paradoxa) were planted in an enclosed area, previously mechanically seeded, at the NE corner of Lake Liddell. The seeded area is in four rows about 5m wide. The plants were distributed between these rows, mainly for understory, but some were used to provide a mix of larger plants.
The plantings are the final stage of vegetation corridors through the Reserve. Nearly 30,000 plants have been introduced since 2004, when Stephen joined the Board of the Reserve as Chairperson. We would like to thank Hunter River Times Journalist, Jem Anshaw, who came along and did a cover story for us.
