Orchid Hunting

Exciting Orchid News

The Scoop

Whilst most people were out celebrating a day off for the King’s Birthday long weekend on Monday 10th June, Broke/Bulga Landcare were out celebrating the appearance of Pterostyllis gibbosa (Illawarra Greenhood orchid) that has been a long standing yet often concealed member of the community. This clandestine orchid could not escape the keen eyes of the Broke/Bulga Landcare group who had gathered to survey the plant on Monday morning and were pleased to find it was in fine form, both in numbers and distribution. Broke/Bulga Landcare is continuing their partnership with the NSW Saving our Species Program, taking on guardianship of the local population. The Illawarra Greenhood is known only from a handful of populations in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions, with a disjunct population at Milbrodale. This project demonstrates one of the many ways Landcare groups can help care for the local environment.
