Join the University of Newcastle and Hunter Region Landcare Network in welcoming Migratory Shorebirds back to the Hunter Estuary. 

This 2-part event will be held across the weekend with informative presentations at the Hunter Wetlands Centre and a hands-on observation experience the following day.
 

SHOREBIRD INFO SESSION – SATURDAY 15th 

9am – 1pm 

Hunter Wetlands Centre Conference Room 

A morning of presentations to learn about shorebird ecology, habitat, ongoing research, conservation & more 

 

SHOREBIRD SPOTTING – SUNDAY 16TH

12 – 2 pm 

Stockton Sandspit 

Come watch shorebirds at their high tide roost, practice ID & collect data

Sessions run by Dr Andrea Griffin and Doctorate students, Ms Mattea Taylor and Louise Williams from the University of Newcastle. 

Learn: 

  • Shorebird ID 
  • How to become a citizen scientist 
  • Ongoing local research & monitoring
  • Conservation of local endangered species.
  • Their epic migrations
  • How you can help to protect them

Dr Griffin is a leading avian researcher on using technological advances in tracking equipment to quantify the movements of birds. Ms Taylor and Ms Williams are studying the ecology and behaviour of shorebirds in the Hunter Estuary and developing research methodologies tools that will help address the threats they face.
