St Philip’s Christian College Cessnock Junior Landcare

2012 – Present

Our junior  Landcare group formed in 2012 following the relocation of the College from the old TAFE site in Cessnock to the current site at Nulkaba. Motivation to form the group came from Leslie  Pearson, a member of the College Council who was supported by the Council and the then principal, Malcolm Bromhead. Teaching staff have coordinated the group activities.

There has been student involvement in revegetation activities on the site since 2008 and programs such as Waterwatch were undertaken prior to the formal establishment of our Junior Landcare group. Cessnock City Council provided trees that were planted by students in 2008 prior to the College’s relocation. Funding and support from Hunter Water enabled plantings along a  150 metre section of Black Creek, and Hunter Region Landcare Network supplied 60 river red gums and 14 wattles for our site.

In recent years the group has concentrated on activities surrounding National Tree Day in July and regular funding to foster that activity from the Cessnock Toyota dealership. 

Other sources of funding and support have come from Hunter Water enabling plantings along a 150 m section of Black Creek, the supply of 60 River Red Gums and 14 wattles from Hunter Region Landcare Network, and Cessnock City Council provided the first sourcing of trees that were planted  by students in 2008 prior to the College’s relocation.
