Terry and the Garden Escapees

Flora, The Scoop, Tools, Tips and Tricks

Have you heard of Terry Inkson?

Terry is a bit of a local celebrity in the weeds world, being a passionate advocate for the environment through his knowledge, experience and expertise on weed identification and treatment. With over 40 years in the horticultural sector, Terry’s career has spanned nursery management, council landscaping and administration, civil construction, horticultural advisory roles, biosecurity management and membership with the Australian Institute of Horticulture.  He has worked in various parts of the Hunter and Mid-Coast and is currently a Weeds Officer with Cessnock Council.

Terry produced the first edition of the now well-known book Garden Escapees and Invasive Weeds of Bushland Reserves in 2006.  The book is a testament to his enduring dedication in sharing his lifelong passion to assist communities in dealing with their local weeds. Since then, Terry has worked enthusiastically and tirelessly, continuing to update this valuable resource.  No doubt hundreds of new weed infestations have been avoided thanks to this book.

The guide helps you to identify, prioritise, and manage weeds based on species, distribution, and impact. It includes links to reliable sources such as NSW WeedWise, PlantNET, Gardening Responsibly, CABI, and IUCN. Interactive features connect users to further evidence-backed information, making the resource engaging and practical.

This year, Hunter Region Landcare Network have been assisting Terry in updating the current edition, making it even more relevant to Landcarers.  The latest update is a product of Terry’s passion, creativity, and belief in continual improvement. It serves as both an educational tool for students and a practical guide for communities, empowering individuals to take responsibility for the land under their care and contribute to both biosecurity and biodiversity through informed gardening choices.

The limited ‘Muster edition’ of this book will be available to attendees at our Landcare Muster on Saturday 13th September, thanks to funding from Hunter Local Land Services. Come and join us on the day and pick up a copy! Terry himself will be available to discuss and demonstrate how to use this valuable resource – and he will even sign it for you! In the morning, Terry is also running a practical workshop on using the book and welcomes feedback on the resource from Landcarers attending the Muster.
