Finally, the column you’ve all been waiting for, the last of the Eucalypt keys. Now all I have to do is put them all together, rewrite them so it’s all a fairly standard format and get more photos. Sigh!
Obviously I’ll have made a few errors and things may not be clear on some descriptions throughout this and the previous keys. If you’ve found errors flick me an email and I’ll do my best to correct it.
What next after this? Well, given there’s around 140 species of wattle in the region, it ain’t gunna be them!

Adult leaves lanceolate 10-15cm long, 2-3cm wide, glossy, umbellasters 11 or more, peduncle terete, 10-20mm long, pedicel 5-8mm long, fruit hemispherical 4-5mm long, 5-6mm dia, disc flat, valves enclosed or rim level. North from Nundle, also recorded in Dungog area.
Eucalyptus campanulata New England Blackbutt
Tree to 30m (sometimes 45m), bark persistent on trunk and larger branches, grey – grey brown, upper bark smooth, white or grey shedding in long ribbons. Juvenile leaves ovate, dull grey-green. Adult leaves lanceolate, 9-18cm long, 1-2.5cm wide, green, glossy to semi glossy. Umbellasters 11 or more flowered, peduncle terete or angular, 10-15mm long, pedicels 4-6mm long, fruit 5-6mm long, 5-6mm dia, disc flat, valves enclosed or rim level. Higher country north from Barrington Tops.

Tree to 30m, rough bark to middle branches, juvenile leaves ovate, dull grey-green, adult leaves lanceolate 8-14cm long, 1-2.5cm wide, grey-green, glossy, umbellasters 11-15 flowered, peduncle terete or angular, 5-14mm long, pedicels terete 4-6mm long, fruit conical, pyriform or clavate, 5-10mm long, 6-8mm dia, disc flat or slightly raised, valves enclosed or rim level. Dry sclerophyll forest on moderate fertility soils south from Cessnock and Uarbry (near Cassilis)

Tree to 30m, bark persistent on lower trunk or full trunk, smooth above, white, grey or yellow. Juvenile leaves lanceolate, dull green to glossy green, adult leaves narrow lanceolate, 9-15cm long, 0.7-1.5cm wide, green, glossy, umbellasters 11 or more flowered (to 30 flowers), fruit globose, hemispherical or ovoid, contracted at the apex, 4-6mm long, 4-6mm dia, disc depressed (rarely flat), valves enclosed. South from Putty.

Tree to 35m, rough bark on trunk and larger branches, smooth white or grey above, bark shedding as short ribbons or flakes. Juvenile leaves ovate to broad lanceolate, dull grey-green. Adult leaves narrow lanceolate or lanceolate, 10-25cm long, 1.5 – 2.6cm wide, dull, grey-green or bluish, umbellasters 3 flowered, peduncle terete or angular, 11-34mm long, pedicel terete4-20mm long, fruit cylindrical, 10-17mm long, 9-16mm dia, disc depressed, valves enclosed or rim level. ovoid or campanulate. Coastal, south from Port Stephens, inland to Cessnock.
Eucalyptus pilularis Blackbutt
Tree to 70m, bark shortly fibrous to stringy, juvenile leaves, sessile, amplexicaule, opposite, broad lanceolate, dull green to 17 x 4cm, discolorous, adult leaves lanceolate, 9-16cm x 1.3-3cm, concolorous, glossy green to dark green. Umbels 7- 15 flowered, peduncle narrowly flattened, to 1.7cm, buds pedicellate, sometimes 2 ribbed, cap conical, fruit globose, hemispherical or ovoid 6-7mm x 7-11mm, disc depressed or flat, valves enclosed. Coastal hinterland inland to Freeman’s Waterholes and Clarence Town.

Tree to 30m, sometimes 45, rough bark persistent on trunk and larger branches, shortly fibrous, compact (box like), upper bark smooth, grey or white shedding in long ribbons, branchlets glaucous, juvenile leaves broad-lanceolate to ovate, dull, grey-green. Adult leaves lanceolate, 9-15cm long, 1.2-2.8cm wide, green, glossy, umbellasters 7-15 flowered, peduncle narrowly flattened or angular, 8-16mm long, pedicels terete 1-4mm long, fruit conical or pyriform, 8-11mm long, 7-9mm dia, disc raised or slightly flat, valves enclosed or rim level, low to medium fertility soils generally south from Morisset with outliers at Bylong and Dungog.
Eucalyptus fastigata Brown Barrel
Tree to 50m, bark persistent on trunk and larger branches, smooth above, white to grey, shedding in long ribbons. Adult leaves concolorous to slightly discolorous Umbels paired (can be both single and paired), 7-12 flowered, fruits cone shaped to pyriform, higher altitudes on fertile soils. Barrington Tops to Murrurundi, also recorded in Watagans NP.

Tree to 40m, bark persistent to larger branches or throughout. Juvenile leaves hispid Adult leaves dull (9-14 x 1.5-2.5cm) umbellasters 7-11 flowered, peduncle terete, fruit hemispherical 6-10 x 7-12mm., medium to high fertility moister soils. Widespread in higher country from Coolah to Barrington Tops, also higher altitudes in Wollemi NP.

Eucalyptus radiata Narrow-leaved Peppermint
Tree to 30m (sometimes to 50), juvenile leaves opposite, narrow lanceolate to broad lanceolate, dull green, adult leaves narrow lanceolate or lanceolate, 7-15cm x 0.7-1.5cm wide, green, glossy or semi glossy, Greater than 11 flowers, fruit globose, hemispherical or pyriform, 4-6mm long, 4-6mm dia. North from Nundle and south from Martindale (Wollemi NP).

Tree to 20m, juvenile leaves opposite, orbiculate to ovate, glaucous, adult leaves lanceolate 12-20cm long, 1.5-2.5cm wide, green, semi glossy, umbellasters 7 flowered, fruit hemispherical or conical, 5-7mm long x 4-7mm wide, disc raised, valves exserted. In the region generally found on better soils in small stands. Generally west of Scone.

Juvenile leaves very shortly petiolate, opposite for a few pairs then alternate, ovate to 4 x 2 cm, discolorous, adult leaves petiolate, lanceolate to broad lanceolate to falcate, to 8 x 1.3cm, inflorescences axillary, 7-11 flowered, peduncle short, stout, angular to 0.6cm, buds sessile, fruit sessile and crowded, hemispherical to truncate globose, to 5 x 5mm, valves 3 or 4 rim level. Recorded East of Nundle.
